Local Area Plans

Local Area Plans are prepared for one of two purposes:

  • to guide the development and improvement of areas likely to undergo large-scale development within the period of the Cork City Development Plan (2004-2010); or
  • to promote development in areas that would benefit from economic, physical and social renewal.

Local Area Plans are currently being prepared to facilitate the development and improvement of a number of areas within the city. The plans take two forms: statutory Local Area Plans and Area Action Plans. Local Area Plans set out detailed strategies for land use, transportation and the physical environment where the private sector will be the prime mechanism for delivering change through the development process. Area Action Plans set out strategies for change where it is envisaged that the City Council will have a driving role in delivering change, and are therefore able to go to a finer degree of detail.

In relation to the Docklands area a Local Area Plan for the North Docks Area was adopted by the City Council in December 2005, while the South Docks Local Area Plan was adopted in February 2008.
