Event: The Annual Spirit of Mother Jones Festival and Summer School

Location: The Maldron Hotel and the Firkin Theatre in the Shandon Historic Quarter, Cork City.

Additional Information: Just six years in existence it is now one of Ireland’s largest public history festivals with some 30 events over 5 days and almost 2000 people expected. It honours Cork woman Mary Harris known as Mother Jones who became a trade union activist and self-proclaimed “Hellraiser” in America in the early 1900s. Regarded as “America’s most dangerous woman” she became a labour activist in her 60s and died aged 93 in 1930.

Speakers include Manus O’Riordan who will speak about his father, Spanish Civil War hero Michael O’ Riordan who was born on Popes Quay in 1917. Fr Sean McDonagh will warn of the effects of climate change. Cllr Warren Davies from Hastings will discuss the importance of Ballineen, Co Cork born Feargus O’Connor the Chartist leader.

Cllr Marcia D’Alton will talk about the 17 year long battle against the plans for the Cork Harbour incinerator, while author Frank Connolly will tell the story of Tom Gilmartin.

Historian Anne Twomey will give an account of “The Revolutionary Women of Cork’s Northside 1916-1923.”. There is a packed programme of 30 events over the five days and all talks are free and open to the public.

Films include the absolutely stunning environmental documentary, A Plastic Ocean, which will be an Irish premiere. The Cork Premiere of the story of Frank Ryan made by the Limerick LIBMT and Cork based Frameworks Films will be shown at the Firkin Theatre. Mari-Lynn Evans will introduce her new film Blood on the Mountain. The Frameworks Films documentary Mother Jones and her Children will be shown on the opening day of the festival.

Singers include Jimmy Crowley, Karen Underwood, the Cork Singer Club, Richard T Cooke, John Nyhan, Mick Treacy, the Sweet Olive String Band and the Mother Jones Ceili Band and many others.
